Class 1

Welcome to Class 1!

Summer

This term we will be learning all about 'The Victorians'. We have already had a mystery guest (Queen Victoria) from the past come and visit our classroom. The children enjoyed asking lots of questions about her life to find out who she was and what her life was like. Our topic will see us finding out about Victorian inventions, what life was like for school children, placing events on a timeline and significant people from the past such as Florence Nightingale. There will be lots of art opportunities as we look at the work of William Morris and create printing plates to make our own wallpaper.

In Science, we will be studying plants, how they grow and the structure of flowers. The children will be able to grow some of their own plants and carry out some tests to see what encourages plants to grow well. In English, we will be starting the summer term with 'The Jolly Postman' and Dear Greenpeace which is based around writing letters, before moving onto Traditional tales and nature poems. Maths this term is split into the following units of work: multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, place value, money and time.

Spring

Our theme this term is 'Explorers' where will find out about famous explorers from the past such as Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart. We will be learning the names of the seven continents and five oceans and beginning to identify differences between parts of the world.

In English we will be reading The Last Wolf by Mini Grey and will write our own stories based on this model. This story amalgamates several characters from other traditional tales and has lots of rich vocabulary in it to broaden children's knowledge of descriptive words and phrases. We then move onto the Mr Postmouse books and the Paddington Bear series.

In Maths, we will be consolidating number bonds to 20 before we move onto place value up to 50, length, height, weight and volume. The children will be taught through a variety of practical activities and our Powermaths text books, which follow the White Rose scheme of work.

Artwork will be inspired by Kandinsky and the children will be looking at interesting ways of using shape and colour in art. For further details see our topic web and class letter below.

Autumn

Our topic this term is 'All about me' where we will be getting to know all about you! We look at our bodies and keeping healthy in Science, your favourite things to do, your family, things that are special to us and where we live. This year, you will have two teachers: Mrs Armstrong on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Mrs Blossom on Thursdays and Fridays. We can't wait to see you and listen to what you have been doing over the summer.

We will be reading lots of stories in class but the first one we will be looking at is 'The Tiger who came to tea'. As part of our English work we will be writing shopping lists, ordering the story and coming up with our own version of the story. Hopefully you received our letter inviting you to our own tea party which will be a lovely way to start our year together in Year 1.

In Maths, we will begin by looking at numbers that add up to 10 and 20 involving lots of practical activities and small group work supported by an adult. We use a system called Power Maths and will be gradually introducing the children to working from a book.

In year 1, we are very much led by children's ideas and operate a play based approach to learning alongside our lessons. Continuous provision is carefully planned to meet children's needs and stimulate their interests, alongside daily Phonics, Maths and English sessions. Please see our topic web below for further details about our learning this Autumn.
