Curriculum Intent
At Sutton Bonington Primary School, we teach children that PE focuses on physical development, sports and active lifestyles.
Our intention in PE is to inspire all children to be active, show resilience and determination, learn new skills and improve existing ones. We aim to develop a sense of teamwork and leadership. We encourage children to take part in the competition element of sport and to develop their understanding of the importance of fair play. Our curriculum is inclusive and supports all children in developing confidence in physical activity to support their health and fitness. We encourage pupils to develop their understanding of the way in which they can use their body, equipment, and apparatus safely, imaginatively, and effectively. Our PE curriculum, along with Science and PSHE, teaches children about the importance of physical activity and nutrition to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It also supports children in understanding how physical activity and healthy eating can impact positively on emotional wellbeing.
Curriculum Implementation
Our PE curriculum follows a scheme of work from Get Set 4 PE which is closely aligned to the National Curriculum. This scheme supports a clear and sequenced progression of skills and knowledge, both within each year group and from one year to the next. In Foundation and Year one, the focus is on the core skills of balance, coordination and agility, whereas in KS2 children develop a broader range of skills and apply and improve those skills across different activities and sports.
Children take part in twice weekly PE lessons. Every half term, children learn skills, rules and tactics through two different sports, in line with our coverage document. There is a huge range of sporting activities including: handball, basketball, gymnastics, dance, cricket, tennis etc.
Swimming lessons are provided at some stage in KS2 by qualified swimming teachers to support children in being able to competently, confidently and proficiently swim a distance of at least 25 metres. After school sports clubs are also offered to pupils to enhance the sports provision on offer and provide children with an opportunity to further develop their skills. At lunchtimes, all children can also participate in physical activity with sports coaches and playtime leaders.
Within the Early Years Curriculum, children in Reception experience the PE curriculum through the ‘Physical Development’ area of learning and specifically the ‘Gross Motor Skills’ early learning goal.
Adaptations for children with special educational needs and disabilities are made in line with our SEND Curriculum Adaptations document. These may include the use of specific resources, additional scaffolding, explicit instruction, cognitive and metacognitive strategies or flexible groupings.
Opportunities for children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through PE are also explored where appropriate. Through performance and sequencing of actions in dance and gymnastics, children are able to fully express their feelings and emotions while reflecting on what their bodies can achieve. Children also explore how PE highlights the importance of healthy living and lifestyles and the importance of playing fairly and by a set of rules. Socially, children have the opportunities to work as a team or in coaching roles while culturally, PE allows our children to explore dance, games and traditions from around the world.
Curriculum Impact
By the end of Key Stage 2, we hope that our curriculum will have impacted positively on our children. We hope that our children will:
- Enjoy their learning in PE and have high expectations of themselves to achieve their best.
- Learn and develop new skills and work hard to master those shown to them.
- Develop an understanding of a range of sports and fitness activities
- Learn the importance of taking care of their physical and mental health.
- Learn how to show good sportsmanship and encourage others to do well.
- Learn how to work collaboratively and individually.
- Use a range of PE vocabulary correctly.
- Develop their competences in using a wide range of sports equipment.
- Take responsibility for their own health and fitness.
- Learn to reflect on their progress towards mastering key skills in PE.
- Be provided with the opportunity to take part in after school sports clubs.
We assess the impact of our curriculum through observation, talking with and questioning children as well as setting specific tasks. Teacher assessment is ongoing throughout the year with a formal summative assessment made and recorded at the end of the summer term.
