PE and Sports Premium

We believe all young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.

Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that our pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for our school, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

With this in mind the government commit funding each year for PE and sports activities. This is based on roll numbers. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the physical education (PE), physical activity and sport they provide.  At this school, we employ a number of qualified coaches to undertake PE lessons whist the class teachers/teaching assistant observe good practice. Our coaches are currently:

1) Dan Connolly - First Grade - Mondays

2) Jacob Bourne - First Grade - Thursdays

These coaches will usually take classes but will also run after school clubs now that the Government guidance have lifted restrictions once again.  We thank you for your patience.

Swimming

We participate in the Schools Swimming programme and all children in year 4 were invited to have swimming lessons as part of our curriculum in the last academic year. These are held at East Leake Leisure Centre and are usually in blocks of 8-10 weeks. We aim to ensure that as many of our pupils are able to swim by Year 6 and statutorily have to report this in the sports premium report.  In addition, we offer booster lessons for those in Year 5 and 6 in order that they leave school as competent swimmers as possible. We assess their levels at the end of Year 6 and are required to report this. Our most recent report is attached.  We will not be undertaking swimming sessions this year as we have mixed classes in Year 3 - 5.  We will undertake swimming again in 2022/23.  Our latest swimming assessments are added in the PE IMPACT REPORT.
